ELCOME. You have just entered the largest on-line Museum on the internet. A work in progress, steadily expanding with thousands of high quality images of the greatest paintings and sculpture in history, the Art Renewal Center is building an encyclopedic collection of essays, biographies and articles by top scholars in the field.

ARC is the Eye of the Storm, at the core, hub and center of a major cultural shift in the art world. With a growing body of experts, we are setting standards to become ARC Approved™ for artists, art schools, systems of training, museum exhibitions and historical scholarship, to bring guidance, direction, goals and reality to an art establishment that has been sailing rudderless for nearly a hundred years.

Additionally, the Art Renewal Center is a non-profit educational organization committed to reviving standards of craftsmanship and excellence. Only by gaining a full command of the skills of the past masters can we create the masters of tomorrow. This is a step forward for our culture. Experimentation and creativity can only succeed and prosper when built on a solid foundation of past accomplishments, with the tools which empower artists to realize their visions.

Nothing has been more restricting and debilitating than the theories of modernism, which eliminated these tools, along with the skills to employ them. We are providing a forum for artists, scholars, collectors and the public to appreciate great art, and to recognize that they're not alone in their suspicions about the emptiness of modern and postmodern art. These suspicions are fully justified by the overwhelming body of evidence and historical facts.

"Nobody who has invested much time down
a blind alley likes the messenger who shines
a light at the brick wall up ahead."

Articles on Albert Goodwin

ARC is pleased to announce several articles on Albert Goodwin, a leading Victorian landscape painter, and protégé of John Ruskin (as was JMW Turner).
"for pure aesthetic delight an untouched sketch of Albert Goodwin's on the spot is better than any finished drawing."
--John Ruskin

'It is a great relief in an exhibition like this', wrote the art critic of The Spectator in his review of the RWS Winter Exhibition of 1881, 'which is mainly one of the disciplined skill exerted in somewhat commonplace directions, to turn to pictures like Mr. Goodwin's, wherein the poetic feeling is so strong as to make us forget the technical skill which the artist possesses'.

    I cannot express...

    Dear Art Renewal Center

I cannot express how much your website has influenced me!!

I have been listening to all the podcasts and greatly enjoy them.

I became interested in William Bouguereau in my teens and still today find it
disgracefull when in books such as "Famous French Painters of the 18th
centuary" or "The top 100 painters in history" that he is not included

Ted Seth Jacobs Portrait Intensive at BACAA

ARC Master, Ted Seth Jacobs is leading a
Three Month Intensive Portrait Program at the
Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier in Belmont California
    November 10, 2008-February 13, 2009

    Three-month intensive portrait painting program:
The Uniqueness of the human Individual

Ted Seth Jacobs, specialist on Light and Structure~
Likeness depends upon accurate drawing. The basis of drawing is seeing the exact special shape of everything. Making the head look human requires an understanding of organic structure, from the largest underlying masses to the smallest surface forms. It is necessary to paint a likeness of every structure.

You will learn to create form through the actions of light. Gradations must be shaped, according to the light direction and the shape of each form. Each individual subject's features are generated from a matrix proportional ratio. This will be an intensive session, loaded with information. The great portrait tradition is based on non-photographic human interactions. One human being interpreted by another!
